Karen Vigmostad

After forty years working to restore, conserve, and improve the quality of the Great Lakes and their islands, I created Five Blue Lakes to bring others along as I research, photograph, and travel (often as an arm-chair traveler) to the Great Lakes and their islands. The inspiration for Five Blue Lakes comes in no small measure from those who have taken one of my Great Lakes or writing classes, come to a lecture, or somehow we have crossed paths overy the years. Your interest and love for the Great Lakes and islands spurs me on.

Co-pilot Henry

This was my beloved dog, Henry. He passed away as an elderly dog on June 3, 2020. and I miss him every single day. We traveled around exploring the Great Lakes and other areas of this beautiful continent in a small motorhome called ECOVSN (since sold and also still missed). You can read about our journeys around much of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan at Circling the Lakes.

With Five Blue Lakes, I am pleased to share my lifelong fascination and love for the Great Lakes. Hope you will enjoy my insights and findings about these amazing lakes and their islands as I research and write a book on the 32,000 islands of the Great Lakes, a joyful focus of my work since 1995.

So welcome to Five Blue Lakes! Please do send your ideas, comments, and questions to me at karen@fivebluelakes.com. I thrive on learning what you care about and responding to your questions and interests.

Here we go!
